My daughter worse since laparoscopy

Hi im at my wits end,my daughter who is 22 had endemetriosis removed 8 weeks ago, since then she has been in hospital 3 times around her cycle with vomiting and pain.We keep being told this is normal up to 6 months after due to inflammation .Has anyone else experienced this?

  1. I'm terribly sorry to hear your daughter is experiencing this! It sounds absolutely awful. I did not have this experience after surgery (and I've had four)...perhaps others will weigh in here about it. I would go back to the gyn/surgeon who performed the surgery and let them know this is happening. Of course, I'm not a doctor, but I don't think it's normal to be in that much distress after surgery, even with the inflammation that can occur. Endo can definitely recur after surgery, especially if it was an ablation rather than an excision. Does your daughter have other health issues that may be contributing to this? ~Katrina, Endometriosis.net Advocate

    1. I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. Like Katrina, this was not my experience after my surgeries either. I do remember the recoveries being difficult and being in a lot of pain, but it was not centered around my cycle and I wasn't vomiting. I can't even imagine how terrible it was feel to vomit when recovering from surgery, just sneezing was agonizing. I agree with Katrina, I would be calling my surgeon.

      1. Like others have said, I'm sorry to hear your daughter is going through this. I can't say for sure what's going on, but I can say that I've never had a doctor tell me to expect 6 months of vomiting and pain after surgery -- and I've had 3 of them.

And while the first period after each surgery was rough, I never felt so bad I needed to go to the hospital. I would definitely get a second opinion if these are new symptoms and the original surgeon isn't offering relief. They need to make sure something else isn't going on. For example, I developed a bacterial infection after my second surgery which made me feel much worse in different ways, and my surgeon told me it was "normal" at first to have bleeding, discharge, and cramping. I didn't get better until I finally got the right diagnosis and medication for the infection -- almost a month later.

But I will add that removal of endometriosis was not helpful for my period pain. I still have a uterus and ovaries. And with that comes very serious pain when I'm ovulating or on my period. I used to vomit from it when I was in my 20s, something I've learned to manage as I've gotten older. However, these symptoms were present BEFORE my surgery.

Your daughter should not be expected to endure months of symptoms like this. Definitely keep searching for answers. - Keri (team member)

        1. I know just how frustrating this is. You and your daughter should not have to be going through this, I am so sorry. Pain and vomiting is NOT normal, whether someone had surgery or not. And it angers me that there are doctors out there who still believe this and say this to patients. I can't say I had vomiting after my surgery (I have had 4 surgeries) but I can say, I did not feel better, after any of them. The pain and inflammation was still intense. I have been told the first few menstrual cycles after surgery could be a bit more painful as well. Which has rung true for me. Honestly, I would reach out to this surgeon and keep requesting they give you some answers that this is NOT normal. And if they truly will not help, I would suggest a second, third, fourth opinion. Whatever you need to get some answers and relief for your daughter.

I know you had posted this back in November so I hope since then you have received answers and your daughter has found relief. Please let us know how everything is going. We are thinking about you both and sending all the good thoughts and hugs we possibly can <3 -Kimberli (advocate)
