Covid Vaccine While Having Period

I'm scheduled to get my Covid booster at the same time I'll be having my period. I'm worried about the possibility of clotting. I've been having heavy periods and bad endo flare ups recently. Should I reschedule it do another time in my cycle? Or is it safe to get while having period? I just think about all that endo tissue also shedding and I'm wondering if being vaccinated during this time is the best idea. But schedule wise, it makes the most sense to get it when I have my appointment. So what do I do???

  1. hi there. I will start with saying that I am not a medical professional, so I cannot give you an exact answer to this. Your best bet would be to phone up your doctor or even your pharmacist/whomever is giving the booster and ask them about it to see what they think. I will say though, I had gotten my booster while close to my period. I hadn't noticed a difference at the time. If it is something that is stressing you out though and you are able to hold off from getting it, then maybe reschedule it for a few days after! But I would definitely phone a medical professional first and just discuss your concerns with them! Good luck, thinking of you. Please keep us posted. -Kimberli (advocate)

    1. This is a great question. And like Kimberli says, it's one that's best for your pharmacist or regular doctor. But I'll weigh in with my experience. I received the new Moderna Covid booster very near my period and did not have any adverse side effects other than the general flu-like issues that everyone can get. And I have very heavy periods with clotting. I also believe the mRNA vaccines do not have the same blood-clotting concerns as the J&J vaccine, at least according to the CDC. Personally, I'm more afraid of the blood clots and inflammatory issues that can happen as a result of getting sick with Covid, so I didn't want to postpone my shot. But I'd definitely bring this up with your doctor if you're worried about any issues! - Keri (team member)
