Surgery pre-tip advice

Just have a question,if I woke up with a chesty cough (asthma) do u think my surgery would be postponed in a week because of it ?

  1. hey there! It would depend. I know all doctors/surgeons are different in what they consider unsafe to continue with surgery. It will depend on how bad your chest cough is too. I think for the most part, as long as you are feeling okay and have no fever or sign of infection, I could see them moving forward. But this is definitely a question you will have to ask them. Hopefully you wont have to postpone anything! Sending you good thoughts. -Kimberli (advocate)

    1. This is a good question for your doctor! If you haven’t already, I’d just shoot them a message through MyChart (if you use that) or give them a call and/or leave a message with the nurse. They might be able to suggest pre-surgery asthma treatment to prepare you better for the procedure (but I don’t have asthma, so I can’t say for sure).

Based on my experience, my doctors led me to believe they’d only postpone surgery if I tested positive for COVID-19 or had an active infection of another kind. They told me that’s because surgery already raises the risk of infection and is hard on the body, so I might not heal as fast if I was already sick. But for things like migraine, they told me they wouldn’t postpone, and it would be safe for me to take meds pre-surgery for an attack.

Though, I definitely would check in with your surgical team to get their advice! - Keri (patient leader)
