Normal MRI but awaiting surgery

Hi guys, I’ve had a laparoscopy over two years ago and got diagnosed with wide spread endometriosis. Recently, I’ve had a relapse in symptoms and I had an mri. The MRI came back normal but my surgeon has agreed to do another laparoscopy. Although my symptoms feel identical to before, I’m anxious they’ll do the surgery and not find anything. I was wondering- has anyone had a normal MRI but they’ve found endometriosis in the surgery?

When I was first diagnosed, I did not have an mri for context.

Also does anyone find their endo gives them a pinching pain in the lower groin area? This is where my pain radiates. It’s a awkward pain to describe to people!

  1. Hi . We are not medical experts, but I can assure you that MRIs are not always definitive. An MRI of my foot missed bone chips that were inbedded in a tendon and had completely shredded it. I had to have a chunk of my tendon removed to the surprise of the surgeon. So, I have to believe it might miss scattered endometetrial tissue, especially if the MRI is performed when you had less swelling that usual. Laparoscopy remains the only way to definitely identify endometrial tissue growth. Here is an article about imaging and endometriosis that might put you a bit more at ease about having another surgery: https://endometriosis.net/diagnosis/imaging-ultrasound.
The pain of endo can be hard to compare with others because endo tissue can cause so many different symptoms for different people depending on where it grows. So it is very possible your pain is related to endometriosis even if others have not experienced it. I hope others chime in here with their own stories and that you will keep us updated. I will be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
