Mood swings

Hi

Does anyone else get extremely severe mood swings with endometriosis? I get it so bad and particularly just before my period but it's affecting my whole life. I turn into an angry monster filled with rage and then a complete emotional mess, crying because I feel so depressed and suicidal. It's like pms but to the absolute extreme.
And its not about the pain, I can cope with that and the extreme tiredness all the time but these mood swings need to go.

Has anyone tried anything for them? I'm already on the pill, painkillers and sertraline for depression

  1. hi dear Karen. Firstly, thank you for being here in this community and coming to us with your question. Second, we are so sorry and saddened to hear of what you are experiencing and going through. I want you to know this one thing, you are definitely not alone. This is something I have been experiencing a lot too. Many times, I would much rather the pain, rather than those extreme mood swing changes. So, I absolutely get it. Are you familiar with PMDD? I am pretty sure that is what I deal with before my periods and it could be something for you to look into if you haven't yet. Here are some articles that may be helpful about it: https://endometriosis.net/living/pmdd

Hoping you find these helpful and that you do find some answers and ways to manage as well. I know it is exhausting. Just know you are not alone, please reach out whenever you need. We are here for you <3 -Kimberli (team member)

    1. Hi ! The articles Kimberli posted are great! One is mine😀 My PMDD is pretty severe. Hormonal birth control actually made it worse -- which I find confusing since it's supposed to be a treatment. It might be worth asking your doctor if there's another birth control option that might work better for PMDD. I did find some relief with Zoloft (sertraline) and Cymbalta (Duloxetine). SSRIs or SNRIs are helpful if the PMDD is caused by a serotonin issue related to your cycle (I've been told), and my doctor actually prescribed extra Prozac JUST during the week before my cycle. I'm currently on Wellbutrin, which does take the edge off. But it's not as helpful as the serotonin-based pills (which made my vision blurry, unfortunately). My doctor suggested a mood stabilizer as another add-on option, if I feel my PMDD is too severe. But I haven't tried that yet. Good luck! - Keri (team member)

      1. Chiming in here to say I'm really sorry you experience this; it's awful. I had terrible mood swings and a lot of rage. These symptoms have abated for me now that I've had both ovaries removed, but I certainly wouldn't suggest that as a route for you to go right now. I hope the articles Kimberli posted offer you some solutions. ~Katrina, Endometriosis.net Advocate
