Reoccurrence at age 75

In 1981 at the age of 32 I had a total abdominal hysterectomy due to endometriosis. At that time my GYN put me on Premarin. In 2009 I developed painful lower back pain and pain in the lower right quadrant. My Primary MD ordered a CT scan and it showed my right ovary was very enlarged. What ovary, it had been gone since 1981. I went to my GYN and within a week I was in surgery and was full of endometriosis. My ureters ,
And my large intestines, my surgery lasted 3 hours. He took me off of the Premarin, but the symptoms were terrible, total menopause. So he prescribed the lowest dosage and he said if it returned I would be 80 and by then who would care? Easy for him to say, I’m now 75 and something is not right. I’m having intermittent bouts of brief nausea without vomiting which lasts a few minutes followed by intense gagging a pressure in my lower bowels. My gastro Dr did an EDG and found nothing. I have an appointment with my correct Primary Dr. COULD THIS BE A RETURN OF THE DREADED ENDOMETRIOSIS? Has anyone also experiences this type of situation at age 75.

  1. Hi . Given the unpredictable and stubborn nature of endo, I wouldn't rule it out. How awful of that doctor to say a recurrence wouldn't matter when you are 80! Author Margaret Atwood is 84 and still producing amazing works of literature. Imagine if she'd developed something like this at 80 and a doctor dismissed it because of her age? That was so ignorant and insensitive of that doctor.
Have you considered seeing an endometriosis specialist again? We are not medical experts, but it seems worthwhile to have a laparoscopy, even if it just rules out endo. Endometrial tissues often does not appear on ultrasounds or MRIs, so it is really the only way to know for sure. If any doctor dismisses your concerns, I would probably dismiss the doctor. Agism in the healthcare industry is real and destructive. You deserve the same care as someone younger. Keep us posted if you don't mind. I will be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
