Lupron Injections recommended by OB, need advice

Hi, everyone. I just underwent laparoscopy surgery to remove endometriosis. I have been trying to get pregnant for over a year at 36 years old, no luck. The OB said most likely endo and to have surgery. So I did. At post-op, OB said my case is severe, at an 8 out of 1-10, and that he couldn't remove all of my endo and now recommends NINE months of Lupron injections.

I am unclear on how this will affect my fertility. Does anyone have advice? Is there another route I can take? I really don't want to have nine months of injections that have tons of side effects.

  1. I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this, and I hope others chime in with their experience. While I’ve never tried to get pregnant nor have I been on Lupron — even though it’s been suggested to me — let me say that you never have to have a medical treatment that you don’t want. And Lupron comes with some pretty big deal side effects and will certainly postpone your ability to get pregnant.

And, as far as I’m aware, there’s no scientific evidence that shows months of suppressing your hormones with something like Lupron will get rid of endo and help you get pregnant down the road. Though, it’s common for some doctors to prescribe hormone-suppressing treatment after surgery in an attempt to quiet endo symptoms like pain.

Keep in mind that it’s still possible to get pregnant even if you never get your endometriosis treated. My mother had endo that squashed her entire right fallopian tube and ovary…and she still had 3 kids. It just took her several years to get there. And I would hope that today’s fertility doctors are better than the 1970s! - Keri (team member)
