Advice on Mirena Coil

I have had two laparoscopy’s and in a few weeks I’ll be having a hysteroscopy to remove a polyp and potentially fit the Mirena Coil. I have tried a number of contraceptives in an attempt to ease my symptoms however I’ve never found them to be of much help. Aside from pain and heavy bleeding, I find my PMS symptoms to be difficult to manage. My mood becomes very low, I have little to no energy and suffer with my skin breaking out. Historicity, any contraception I have tried has led to similar symptoms and weight gain and I’m worried that the Mirena coil will be the same. I appreciate everyone’s body will react differently however I’d be grateful for any experiences/symptoms people may have suffered from as a result of having the coil fitted? I have reservations around having it fitted and I would be grateful for any advice.

  1. I hope others chime in with their experience because I know the Mirena has helped some people feel better. Here is an article I wrote with some research backing up that idea, in case it's helpful: https://endometriosis.net/clinical/iud

With that said, I've never tried the Mirena IUD. My hesitation is because birth control -- both combined pills with estrogen and the progestin-only pill -- made my symptoms worse, including worsening my mood, cramps, and bleeding. The only option that was neutral was the NuvaRing.

Definitely bring up your concerns about the IUD worsening your symptoms, including mood. And if you decide to go forward, make sure you doctor has a backup plan for how you can get it removed quickly if you decide it's not for you. Good luck! - Keri (team member)
