Surgery solo tips

Due to Covid restrictions,I’m not aloud a support person to sit with me before/after surgery at the hospital to have my first Laparoscopy surgery for endo in 2 weeks as I have anxiety .Any helpful advice to help as wait for surgery solo ?

  1. I am so sorry they will not allow anyone to sit with you before and after 🙁 That makes me so mad and sad. I know for safety measures but still. So before hand, I would suggest to bring a book, maybe some comforting music you would like to listen to or meditations. Sometimes it is even nice to have a personal blanket or stuffy to hold onto. I do know, you could even ask to see if a nurse would spend a little bit more time in the room with you before hand. After surgery, for me, I have found myself to be so out of it, that I usually never realize hubby is in the room with me until I am getting dressed and leaving. So hopefully after surgery, you can mostly just relax until it is time to go. Again, maybe ask if a nurse could also stay with you for a bit then too.
I know it's not ideal to be alone, but I know you will do great. Usually the whole entire thing is so fast, you hopefully won't even realize no one is there. Doctors are constantly coming in and out asking you questions, getting you prepped and same with afterwards. We are sending you all the good thoughts and love we can. We will be there with you in spirit too, keeping you company! Please keep us posted on how it goes. And if you have more questions or just need to chat leading up to it (and even after), we are here <3 -Kimberli (advocate)

    1. no distraction r working atm - never being in hospital before so not sure what to expect.

    2. I understand that. Honestly, it all happens so fast. When you get there they will check you in sometimes they make you give a quick urine sample. Then you will get dressed into the hospital gown and get cozy in the bed. Really after that it is just laying in the hospital bed waiting to go back. There are a lot of nurses and doctors who will come in and out and chat with you and ask questions. You'll get an IV and all sorts of medicines. And before you know it you are going back to the OR for surgery and then waking up from surgery. The nurses should make you feel comfortable and make sure you have everything you need <3 -Kimberli (team member)

  2. Thanks for the support and kind advice.I will try some of these tips to help managed my aniexty as wait.

    1. I had two surgeries recently, once in 2020 before vaccines and one in 2021. I didn't have anyone with me for either surgery. I made sure to have my phone charged up and I listened to my favorite music and a meditation. I'd been using a fantastic meditation by Belleruth Naparstek (https://www.healthjourneys.com/successful-surgery) that I highly recommend. You listen to it for a few days before surgery, the day of, and days after (there are tracks for each stage). This put me in a good mindset and it's very soothing.

I've always been so groggy after surgery that I hardly know what is going on and my partners were able to be there to pick me up after a nurse wheeled me out. Ask the person giving you a ride to bring a pillow to put between you and the seatbelt or to hug...it helped me to have that extra cushioning because being in a car right after surgery isn't a fun time.

I'm someone who often connects with spirits/ancestors as part of my meditation practice, so I imagined them with me as well before the surgery. It helped a lot! I wish you the best possible outcome with your surgery! ~Katrina, Endometriosis.net Advocate
