Menstrual period after laparoscopy

I'm 34 years old had my first lap surgery for endo 5 weeks ago. My recovery process was tough 2 weeks post op, but I've since recovered and better now. I wanted to know if it's normal for my period to be delayed after this surgery? How long did it take some of you to get your period after the surgery? Should I be worried? I've been googling answers and it's made me a little anxious.

  1. Hi , my period was delayed by a few weeks after my own lap surgery, and the doctor had warned me it would be quite heavy, but to be honest, after having heavy periods my whole life, the one I got post-surgery was not such a big deal for me. Your body is healing right now so a lot is going to feel odd. Do speak to your doctor about this, though. They are used to patients coming back to them with questions, and googling is one thing that I do that gives me so much anxiety, and that must stop doing, so I hear you! I hope this helps - Jessa F (moderator)

    1. I appreciate your reply! I spoke with my doctor last week and was advised not to panic and to get in contact again if my period doesn't come this month. It's so hard trying not to google the symptoms you're experiencing. I've learnt that the more you read, the more it plays with your mind. I'm just so used to frequently having my period. it just felt weird to not get them at the time that I was due.

      1. hi there. So glad you did end up speaking with your doctor. I know it is hard not to panic when something you are used to happening around the same time, doesn't happen. Google can be a blessing and a curse sometimes. I have learned a lot from it but also have stressed myself out numerous times haha. Anyways, I have had 5 surgeries and I will say my first period after each one of my surgeries was funky. Some came later, some came around the same time but were extra heavy and painful. My doctors have told me it's just our bodies way of healing. We may feel better/no surgery pain after a few weeks, but our bodies inside are still healing. So just be gentle with yourself. I know the more I stress about things, the later my period comes too. Hopefully this was helpful in at least letting you know you are not alone. <3 Here if you need to chat more! -Kimberli (advocate)

    2. Hi Kimberli, loving the support and reassurance. I have stopped reading into it lol. I've allowed myself to not stress over it. Its been almost 2 months post surgery I should just let my body heal without that unnecessary stress. I have been getting period pains this past week, but minus the bleeding. I might just have to check in with my gyno again.
Again thank you for your support, I'm glad there is platform to let me reach out to other women who have gone through this too. Xx

      1. We're so happy you found us. Like Kimberli, I find Google so tricky to manage emotionally.. it triggers my anxiety to no end, but ironically, there is a lot of interesting stories from patients online, and more safe spaces like this one. I hope your post-surgery worries settle soon. Reach out if you need a chat <3 - Jessa F (moderator)
