Getting diagnosed

Hi all

I’m hoping for some support or some kind of reassurance!

I have been to the GP after experiencing changes in my periods for the past 4 or so months. This month my period lasted 3 weeks and for the past 4 or so months I have been experiencing a lot more pain with my periods. Before this my periods were like clockwork - would last 5 days and have no real issues. I do not use any hormonal contraception.

I’m fairness I have been seen very quickly - I went to the gp a week ago relaying my issues with my 3 week long period. I had an examination and was referred for a transvaginal ultrasound. I had this on Monday and was asked to speak to my gp about the results today. They found thickening in my lining and the gp said she suspects endometriosis (given my age - 24) and doesn’t think it is anything more sinister but considers if I was older they may consider this.

She has said she is going to refer me to a gynaecologist who will possibly do more tests - an MRI and/or a camera to look inside.

Upon consulting dr Google (I know, I know) there doesn’t seem to be a link with endometriosis and a thickened lining.

I was just hoping someone may have had a similar experience or if anyone can share experiences when gp suspected endometriosis - she has referred me to a gynaecologist today but shared that she thinks it will be a couple of months wait.

Any advice/support is welcome as I feel a bit in limbo!

Thanks x

  1. Hi , I'm so glad you stopped by to share your story. Not knowing what is happening in your body is hard, so of course we all tend to worry. I'm glad you've been able to be seen quickly by your GP and referred on. The gynecologist will be the best one to recommend next steps and do some testing to sort this out. Endometriosis can show up differently for different people, so the long episodes of bleeding that you've had, along with the pain, could be an indication of this. As you said, given your age, this is not likely to be anything dangerous--but of course bleeding for so long needs to be sorted out.
Please keep us posted on how things go for you. I'll be sending good wishes for a quick appointment for you. -Audrey (endometriosis.net team)
