How to Eat Out with Food Intolerances

Identifying food intolerances can be incredibly liberating. However, it can also be isolating and socially challenging if you’re trying to eat out. Here’s the process I take to safely eat at a restaurant.

1. Select the restaurant in advance.

2. Review the menu online to identify a meal that could most easily be allergy-friendly.

3. Call the restaurant during off-hours to speak with a manger or chef. Explain any allergies, identify the meal you'd like to order and ask if it’s allergy friendly, and if not, if modifications are possible.

4. Arrive to the restaurant early, introduce yourself to the manager. Once seated, let the server know that you spoke with the manager because of allergies and identified a safe meal option.
