Hungry after periods?

I have been noticing that immediately when my periods end on the 6th or 7 th day am chronically fatigued with body ache plus immensely hungry.I have to feed myself with good serving of protein chicken, mutton or fish to keep myself satiated. Not to mention I also feel dehydrated and have to keep drinking water which I usually do.I keep sipping water throughout the day .Maybe it’s because of the heavy bleeding I feel hungry. Also at the time of ovulation I noticed am unusually hungry.Cooking to satiate my hunger levels always is also getting problematic as I am usually fatigued post periods.

  1. I can imagine how frustrating this is! I know for myself, I had some issues with blood sugar fluctuating around my periods and eating more protein helped with this. I also had a doctor recommending eating a small snack with fat in it before bed, which helped me not wake up feeling hungry. In terms of dehydration, I would recommend drinking something with electrolytes. LiquidIV or another equivalent powder that you can add to water is good, or you can make your own. Water on its own usually doesn't give us enough of the nutrients we need. I know about that from having dysautonomia. You may want to talk to your PCP or gynecologist about this, and also potentially ask for a referral to a nutritionist. I found a lot of support from the nutritionist I saw last year.

  2. I am a female and I can say that I definitely get hungry after my periods. It is not so much the cramps, but the hormonal imbalance that makes me crave food. This has been bothering me since I was in my teens. Read about menstrual disorders here - https://bluebeeobi.com/menstrual-disorders/

    1. yes! those hormonal imbalances can certainly cause hunger! I know this is something I deal with as well. Just wanted to say thank you for commenting and being here for your community members. How are you feeling? -Kimberli (advocate)

  3. hi! This is so frustrating for sure. It is something I deal with as well. For me, it is definitely hormonal imbalance! And also have issues with blood sugar like Katrina mentioned below. If you haven't, I would definitely talk with your doctor about this for sure. Some blood work could be helpful and echoing again what Katrina said, a dietitian really helped me at one point too once I had a better idea of what was going on. I sure do hope you get some answers and find relief. Like I said, I know how frustrating this feeling is yesterday. Sending hugs. Do keep us posted. -Kimberli (advocate)
