Dairy issue after endo surgery

Afternoon ,
I had endo surgery (Laparoscopy)
on the 12th of April. Ever since I was aloud to eat dairy(milk/cheese/ice cream as example) a week after surgery, it’s not agreeing with me from Nausa/occasionally vomit and painful crampy gastric and bloating. Has anyone else experience this ?

  1. Hi , I can't say why you might be having trouble with these foods post surgery, but dairy can be hard to digest for lots of folks with or without endo. I've been vegan for 23 years, but I always got diarrhea, cramping, bloating, and painful gas when I ate dairy.

While I've never heard of surgery bringing on lactose intolerance, your stomach/gut might be a little more sensitive during recovery. I know I always feel a little off the first couple weeks after surgery and tend to gravitate toward bland foods during this time.

The good news is there are tons of dairy-free options out there for everything, including milk, cheese, and ice cream! You could also try something like Lactaid to see if that helps you digest these foods a little better. And definitely bring up the nausea/vomiting with your doctor! - Keri (team member)

    1. Also eat three sources of calcium a day and take a multiple vitamin especially after 40 yo. High sources are green leafy veggies like broccoli and kale, cheese including cottage cheese, salmon and tuna, yogurt, and milk are the biggies.

      1. Thank you for sharing what works for you, Pamela! We always love to hear what has helped others in their endo journeys. I would recommend anyone that wants to switch up their diet to mention it to their physician just to be on the safe side! It's always a good thing to keep your medical team informed on switches or changes.

Pamela, if I may ask, have you noticed a big change in your body since you made the switch to incorporate those sources of calcium and your multivitamin?

    2. Hi yes I have experienced sensitivity around dairy. Mostly, I avoid it, especially milk, cream, yogurt... all of those I consume in dairy-free form. It has helped immensenly with my bloating and other stomach issues. Have you spoken to your doctor about this? It may be worth being referred to a dietician for further guidance on this. - Jessa F (moderator)

      1. yes spoken to my doctor but she hasn’t looked into it as she assumed it’s related to my endo. I’m just careful when I consume dairy products to when my body will tolerate it.

    3. yes, like said at the top, dairy is one of those irritants that can upset the digesive system of so many of us. I also recently discovered that one of my regular dairy alternatives, coconut milk, can give me some serious flare-ups if I consume more than half a glass. I hope you're having more luck than me finding options 😉 - Jessa F (moderator)
