Canker Sores & Endo - Help!

Hi Everyone,

I'm using this as a last resort because I wanted to know if anyone else deals with the same problem. I've had endometriosis for years, but in the last two years I've been dealing with constant canker sores (mouth ulcers).

They happen throughout the month and are so painful. Sometimes I'll have five at the same time, on my tongue and pretty much anywhere in my mouth.

I've tried everything, and they do seem to get worse when I stop my pill, but it's pretty much a constant thing that's impacting my diet and general wellbeing.

Has anyone else dealt with the same? Is there an alternative treatment that doesn't involve contraceptives? Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

  1. I don't know about canker sores related to birth control use, but I discovered that my canker sores were related to food sensitivities. I stopped eating nuts with the skin on and tomatoes and I don't get mouth sores anymore. It could be that something similar is happening for you. I see that you said this is impacting your diet, so perhaps you've already thought of that. Hormonal changes can cause canker sores...a quick Google brought up some results on that. Have you spoken with your doctor about it? Perhaps a different birth control pill would work better? ~Katrina, Endometriosis.net Advocate

    1. ugh- so sorry you are dealing with these too. Like Katrina said, not sure if birth control per say causes them. I haven't heard that yet but it is definitely worth asking your doctor. My canker sores always pop up around that time of the month for me, so it is definitely a hormone/period thing. And also, when I eat certain foods as well. So food allergies/intolerances. I also noted when I am under a lot of stress, they pop up too. Hopefully this is a bit helpful. And that you do get some answers on what is causing yours. For me, the only thing that helps take the pain away a bit is swishing around warm salt water/peroxide in my mouth! -Kimberli (advocate)

      1. Yes I do get canker sores! I’ve had them since I was pretty young. I never really thought it could be related until now. The salt water and peroxide definitely helps a bit. There’s also gels you can use if you havnt already. Apart from that I’ve never really been able to find a solution either.

        1. those gels definitely help too! The numbing ones. Thanks for being here Jules! I am sorry you get canker sores too! I know they are certainly not fun <3 Hope you are having a great week! -Kimberli (advocate)

      2. Oh god...I thought it was just me in the world who experiences that! Its no food allergy for me, but I have serious stomach problems to go along with the endo...In fact I'm also one in the few that have been on the depo shot for the treatment of the endometriosis as long as I have..I've been on it since I was 17yrs. old, and I'm still on it now, and i'll be 48yrs. old in July! It was to make sure I didn't get my period because the alternative was too much to bare............

        1. definitely not alone here! Glad you don't have a food allergy, but man those stomach problems are not fun. I am in that boat too. How do you feel the depo shot has been for you? That is definitely a long time to be on it! But honestly, if it has helped keep so many symptoms at bay, then it has to be worth it! My birthday is in July too! What day is yours!? -Kimberli (advocate)
