My Delicious Dairy-Free Sundae

I bid farewell to dairy when I heard its negative effects on the body. It started off as an experiment, but when I realized how much better I felt, I never went back. But I do occasionally miss the opportunity to get an ice cream sundae on a hot summer day.

An acai alternative

That’s why when my fiancé and I visited a farmer’s market this weekend and I discovered their acai bowls, I was intrigued. I had seen them plenty times before, but they always had so much added sugar and added soy that I took a pass. But this stand offered straight-up pureed fruit with equally delicious toppings. I went for it... It was so delicious!

The pureed fruit was frozen as the “ice cream” base. It was then topped with banana, blueberries, strawberries, shredded coconut, and a sprinkling of hemp seeds. In total, the toppings were no more than one cup. I loved the bright colors of the bowl, the variety of texture, and the vibrant flavors.

More than just a snack

What caught me off guard was what it did for me emotionally. As someone living with extremely limiting food allergies, it was so wonderful to be able to go up to a stand and enjoy a prepared snack.

We don’t always like to admit it but there is an emotional component to food and partaking in food with others.

The experience made me realize how strong I have been over the years to commit to using food as a form of medicine, so I needed to recognize that. I’ve been told that I often don’t give myself much credit for work that I do – even when that work is viewing healthy food choices as non-negotiable.

I also realized that as more and more people are eliminating inflammatory foods from their diet, the food industry is responding. It’s helpful to keep your eyes and ears open for new options that crop up because allergy-friendly alternatives can be equally as delicious.

So, during the summer, keep in mind there are plenty of opportunities to indulge in dairy-free treats. An acai bowl is certainly one of the trendier options, but there’s also frozen banana treats that are incredibly easy to make at home. (Simply freeze peeled bananas and then blend them and enjoy!)

Coconut milk ice cream is another dairy-free option that I’ve come to love. I’ve even discovered a few places that sell it in restaurants or ice cream stands. And of course, simple lemon ice is so refreshing on a hot summer day! What’s your favorite dairy-free summer treat?
